lyrics

It all started mid September
With trees pulled back fiercely blown,
The kid's first day in the city
For which such wind is know,
The tallest mountains in Chicago
Made by boxes that he stacked,
Thick roots grew 'round the fencing
Outside his uptown flat,
Just hours after landing,
Not yet to start unpack,
He set out to a music house
He passed on Broadway Ave

And the band played:
"My lip up, skip it on by, I'll dug it,"
And the band played:
"I'll skip in on by, the by, the by, the by, the by, the by..."
The band played.

Oh how she stood there glowing
Under the neon lights,
A gold relief crept 'round her shoulder,
A second drink well in her sights,
With her ears on the music and her eyes on the crowd
Her mouth spoke soft,
But her clothes she wore loud

And the band played:
"My lip up, skip it on by, I'll dug it,"
And the band played:
"I'll skip in on by, the by, the by, the by, the by,
the by, the by, the by, the by..."
The band played.

The night before her friends had left,
Just two days before she,
They all had jobs in another town,
A year there they would be,
After a week back west,
Her last night to have,
She spent it at a music house
She passed on Broadway Ave

And they danced and they danced,
The walls shook and the floor drank,
The crowd collapsed like the music in their heads,
Her back seat became an eager bed,

The next day they both left,
A year till she'd be back,
He was left unpacking,
His mind on last nights track,

And the band played,
And the band played,
And the band played,
And the band played.
